Toxicology for Alpha Cradle® Foam

Independent tests confirm the safety of Alpha Cradle® brand foam to your patients and staff!

alpha cradle toxicology testingSMP contracted with an independent agency which collected samples for testing at the SMP production facility. Samples were analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography in accordance with general procedures contained in OSHA Method 47.

While the current OSHA permissible exposure limit (PEL) for MDI is 0.02 ppm, the measured airborne concentration of MDI for the SMP samples was LESS THAN THE LIMIT OF DETECTION FOR THE SAMPLING AND ANALYTICAL METHOD OF 0.0008 PPM. Although foaming agents are designed to be used in closed polyol bags, we tested the foam to simulate a spill, or leak. The sample collected six inches above a box containing a reacting foaming agent mixture was expected to present a “worse case” exposure scenario with the foam open to the air.

The fact that NO AIRBORNE MDI WAS DETECTED under these conditions confirms the SAFETY OF ALPHA CRADLE brand foam to hospital employees, who are exposed repeatedly to foam, and to the radiation therapy patients.

When you choose Alpha Cradle brand products you are providing your patients and staff with safe, comfortable and dependable products that have been designed exclusively for the radiation therapy patient.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

INGESTION: Transport person immediately to emergency or trauma center. Take bottles and SDS with you.

SKIN CONTACT: If the mixed foam comes into contact with skin, immediately wash area for 15 timed minutes with tepid soapy water, using cotton washcloth to remove foam from skin. Apply a hand lotion or skin cream with aloe, 5 times a day, for 3 days to reduce redness or sensitivity.

POLYOL (BOTTLE #2) ONLY: Same as above

PAPI (BOTTLE #1) ONLY: Wash the affected area with vegetable oil for 5 minutes, then wash with tepid soapy water for 15 minutes. Apply a hand lotion or skin cream with aloe, 5 times a day, for 3 days to reduce redness or sensitivity.

INHALATION: Leave area and breathe fresh air, outdoors if possible.

EYE CONTACT: Immediately and generously irrigate with saline solution (or water if saline is not readily available). Note that protective goggles are to be worn at all times to prevent contact.

FOAM SPILL: If you spill foam on CLOTHING or HAIR, do not try to wipe the foam off before it hardens. If you do, you will push the expanding foam deep into the material. Let the foam harden completely, then try to pick off as much as possible. Flake off any residue that may remain. Dry cleaning may remove remaining residue.

If foam is spilled on HARD SURFACE, immediately wipe off with a paper towel. Use undiluted acetone to remove residue.

ALWAYS USE PROTECTIVE GLOVES, SMOCK AND EYE PROTECTION WHEN HANDLING FOAM. THESE ITEMS WILL BE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE IF YOUR FACILITY DOES NOT PROVIDE THEM. SOLVENTS: OOPS AND GOOF OFF HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO SUCCESSFULLY REMOVE FOAM RESIDUE. ACETONE (STRAIGHT, UNDILUTED) IS THE BEST SOLVENT, WHILE AN ACETONE-BASED FINGERNAIL POLISH REMOVER ALSO PROVIDES SUCCESS IN REMOVING STAINS.

Alpha Cradle Foam Features

patient-entering-CTATTENUATION: Only Alpha Cradle brand foam has gone through documented testing for transmission and build-up characteristics of the polyurethane foam immobilization devices. This attenuation data was published in a copyrighted article, appearing in the Journal of the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists. The study concluded that the affect of Alpha Cradle brand foam on transmission was insignificant at all megavoltage energies. Effects on build-up are small for higher energy machines. For a detailed review of the study on transmission and build-up effects, call our customer service office and ask for a copy of the report. Reports are gratis for current customers.

HYPERTHERMIA: Tests were performed on Alpha Cradle brand foam that had been subjected to microwave radiation. In the tests, Alpha Cradle foam products were subjected to microwave radiation and to the upper limits of hyperthermia for one hour. The study concluded that Alpha Cradle brand foam did not significantly absorb microwave radiation and no change in the foam’s mechanical properties was noted.

PROVEN SAFETY & RELIABILITY: Only SMP offers repositioning and immobilization products that have been designed specifically for use in radiation oncology centers for more that 23 years. More than 30 different published papers have documented the successful use of Alpha Cradle brand products. Our safe, proven effective system started with 2 forms and today includes more than 40 different anatomical molds. Only SMP forms have been awarded. This will result in a secure, comfortable tool to quickly reposition your patient each time they come in for treatment.
